The construction of the competence center, which cost more than 9 million Euro, was half financed with federal funding, while most of the remainder came from numerous individual private donations and fundraising campaigns. The latter is largely thanks to the dedication of the “Hilfe für krebskranke Kinder Frankfurt” Frankfurt Help for children with cancer association, which raised around 4.7 million Euro. Johanna Quandt, a longtime member of the advisory committee, supported the construction of the stem cell transplant center by donating two million Euro. In her honor, the transplant ward on the second floor of the new building bears the name “Johanna-Quandt-Station.”

The three-story building is laid out like a fruit and features almost 1,290 square meters (approx. 13,885 square feet) of useable floor space. The equipment and examination rooms are located in the inner core, and the patient rooms are arranged in a large circle around the core. The new building was designed by the Frankfurt architecture firm Wörner + Partner Freie Architekten GBR.
