High commendation for the Division of Stem Cell Transplantation and Immunology, Department for Children and Adolescents
At the 43rd "Annual Meeting of the "European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT)" in Marseille Prof. Dr. Peter Bader was honored for the best scientific abstract submitted.
Out of 1200 submissions his work entitled “Prognostic Value of Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) in Children and Adolescents before and after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation” was awarded.
Molecular genetic MRD analysis makes it possible to detect leukemia cells that cannot be verified with conventional microscopy. In the retrospective study with 747 pediatric patients where leading European, North American and Australian transplant centres participated prognostic parameters for impending relapse of leukemia patients could be identified. MRD measurement before and after stem cell transplantation can be used to develop strategies to prevent recurrence of leukemia after stem cell transplantation.
The Dirk-van-Bekkum-Award is selected by the EBMT Board on the annual EBMT meeting for the best scientific work submitted and is the most prestigious award in the field of stem cell transplantation.
